how do you remove the thermostat from the housing of a farmall 300

I think it should just pull out. Probably been in there so long that you'll have to wreck it to get it out.

There's no retainer after you split the housing. It's probably
rusted in place.

I pulled mine apart. Sand blasted the housing inside and out.
Installed new thermostat and gaskets. Been perfect ever
since.

Be sure to install a genuine IH thermostat; an automotive type does not do the job.
If you get the new thermostat first, the procedure will be self-evident.
