i have a ford 600 that I inherited. When we got it it had a 12volt coil on it and ran some but mostly spit and sputtered. I had then put a 6 volt coil on it thinking it would run better but now it's not running at all. I have power to the coil but nothing coming out. I replaced the ignition switch, and have power going to the coil but nothing out. It's a new coil as well.

It was probably a 12 volt coil that requires a resistor. Basically a
six volt coil that uses an external to cut the twelve volt down to
six. If in fact you have a six volt system it is a positive ground.
They are at least wired differently if not a different coil. Depends
on who you talk to. Most of them ive been around were twelve
volt systems. If there is a white porcelain block in the wire going
to the coil take it out because you no longer need it. It is the
resistor. Did you hook the - or + to the ignition switch side of the
coil? On a positive ground you hook the - side.

On the ignition system you need power to the coil and also a set pf points that are working as they should or you will NEVER have any spark. Good chance your points are dirty/bad or set wrong. Point gap is 0.25

That's how we wired it the distributor to the plus and the ground to the -. We have no spark out of the coil. We have replaced everything from the ignition switch, coils points plugs and got power to the coil but nothing coming out.

As I said you have a problem with the points. If the points are not opening and closing and have a good connection the coil CAN NOT make a spark

New points mean nothing since many come with a coating on them to keep them from corroding and that needs cleaned off. You should get a spark at the point if you open them by hand if you do not then you have a short some place or the points need cleaned

Ok so it is a six volt positive ground. Next question does the distributor shaft move side to side and is the shaft turning? If the pin in the shaft sheared or somthing else in the chain to stop the shaft from turning it wont have spark. If the bushings are out really far the points wont open correctly and you can have no spark.

is it a 6v machine?

do you have a wire from the key to one side of the coil, and the other side of the coil to the distribuitor?

have you checked to make sure the points are not closed up, condensor not shorted, and the wire going into the distribuitor not shorted tot he distribuitor, and the smell metal band grom that feedthru insulator tot he points is not touching the case?

if any of those occur, you have grounded both sides of the pints, and will read no voltage on that side of the coil, as it thinks the points are perpetually closed.

The copper plate that goes from the distributor to the points cracked. So we took it off and made a wire with two connectors on it and hooked it back up that way.
