John Deere Ether Port

Hello, my JD 302A has one of these "Ether" ports. The person I purchased this tractor from, was under the impression that this dash "Ether" port, accepted some sort of "Ether Cartridge" or "Pill"?

After reviewing the parts manual for this, looks like it either accepts a special "Can" of ether or you just insert the ether pipe and spray?

Thought about retrofitting this with a spring loaded oil cap or tire stem/cap at manifold?

Any thoughts? Does this old system work OK?

If it is mounted on the dash and there is a cap on it that you screw off to the bottom of the fitting, all you do is get a can of John Deere ether and take the spray nozzle off and insert the top of the can into the center of the fitting from the bottom and push up for a short burst. Replace the screw cap when it starts. Works fine as long as the supply line is not broken to the intake manifold.
 
Dunno WHY you'd need "John Deere ether"?

Take 'most any can of aerosol "starting fluid" from a hardware store, auto supply, farm store, even WaldoWorld, pop off the protective cap, then the red spray nozzle and shove what's left up into the adapter and the can will be triggered and send ether to the intake manifold.

DONE. For a buck or two.

Why would you beat your tractor with ether instead of plugging in the block heater and a battery heater?
 
Thanks for the replies. Mine is as described above. It is in the dash with a stainless fitting and cap.

I prefer to use wd40 to start my other diesels, only if absolutely needed, ET., forgot to plug it in or got a little colder than expected, etc..

I will have to go to JD, bring another can and compare. Mechanic will probably know if other cans will work OK.

Good news, I think. I am not a fan or ether, but sometimes it might be necessary. Again, I will try to use WD40 if possible.

Any other hi lubricity spray that works good out there?

It used to be you could buy any brand of ether
and use it. Just pull the spray nozzle off the
can and then insert that stub into the ether
injector. The style has changed now though on
a lot of ether cans and that doesn't always
work. Back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, buying
Deere brand was not necessary.

That injector line hooks to a very small
orifice that sits inside the intake manifold.
It is often plugged so you might want to check
it.
 
And yes, the system "works OK." Deere included a
limiting orifice inside the intake manifold so you
could not overload the engine with ether and break
pistons. I saw many though that got bypassed, and
raw ether got sprayed into the air-cleaner, and
many a broken piston and fractured rings resulted.

On some Deere tractors - ether was injected
automatically every time you cranked the engine
below a certain temp - via an electric solenoid.
 
Has as none seen any bad results that came from either for
sure? When I ask this I mean I was using either and a rod went
through the side of the block kind of thing?ive seen a lot of guys
(I would classify them as mechanical barbarians) that would run
somthing on either for ten minutes to bleed the filters and ive
only seen one machine that I conclusively say had a problem
because of it but it was a Belarus. Im not saying either is a
good thing. I dont use any more than I have to but im curious
has anyone seen somthing result from either conclusively not
just from a machine having 10000 hours on it?

I am sure going to be more careful because of the good advise here. Cold weather is coming on and I am replacing the other two injectors. Just pulled them today. They are black and caked with soot and carbon.

This might help. I did the runaround with my 2002 7.3 Powerstroke. Took it to a real mechanic after dealership and others ran me around quite extensively.

Bit the bullet and replaced "all" injectors. Starts and runs like a champ again with 429,000 miles. I run pure synthetics and good filters.

Thanks for the ether tips. I did learn to use WD-40 because of it's additional lubricity. Going to be more careful with this as well, but hopefully will not need it.

Monday should be down in the 20's. I am going to try and start my JD 302A without plugging it in, with the new injectors and 5w-40 T-6 syn. I will report.

Any betting folks out there?

I can almost see the old timers laughing at me already but that's alright, they need to have their fun too, I guess.

I really have no idea, I don't know how well these started new, without glow plugs and all?
