Changing PTO shaft in Ferguson TO20

I am changing the PTO shaft to size 13/8''. The one I bought already has the bearings and seals installed. Do I just drain the fluid, remove the four bolts in the flange, pull out the old shaft, and push in the new fhaft, and replace the four bolts? I have been told there is a coller toward the tranmission the shaft goes through and gets out of line, and must be realigned. Please give tips or directions. Thanks

It is pretty much like you have described. I think you want the tractor in gear and the pto engaged so the splines inside stay lined up. Lot of info on the Ferguson site here. John UK is very good resource.

I've done it on TO30's. never had a problem. If you have a hill or ditch you can park the tractor on facing down hill. You won't have to drain the fluid.

park it nose down, pull old one, clean falnge, put new one on with new gasket.

I've done em with and without pto being engaged. if you are worried.. engage it.. .. you will likely have to spin the shaft as you insert it a bit, so don't be alarmed if you stab it straight in and it won't go.. just spin it some.. should slip in..

warning. if you go to pull it and it won't come out. take a hammer and hit the flange so as to spin it to break the gasket and rust. in rare cases it will slide out an inch then stop. if so you are the unlucky owner of a twisted pto shaft. or if it had thrust play.. the end inside may be mushroomed.

if that's the case, post back, as you will be doing plenty more work before it's done...

If you happen to be the unlucky owner of a twisted shaft stop pulling the pto bolt it back together and get it in the shop. Last one I did I had to pull the trans top cut the pto shaft in two places. You have to separate the rear end from the transmission to accomplish this. Then drop and dismantle the hyd pump drive the last piece of shaft out and then clean out the five pounds of metal filings before reinstalling everything. Most likely it will work like its supposed to and just pull out but I wouldn't want to attempt this in the ditch in front of my house.
