Where to start

I got a 1959 D17 given to me two years ago , the owner had not covered the exhaust so rain had got in and filled the engine full of water . I drained the water and fluids out and got the pistons out , found a rebuild kit on yesterdays tractors now where to start . Have not been on our around a tractor much since I was 10, need a little advice where to go from here .
I cant let this old tractor go to waste , want to get it back to working , any help will be much welcomed .

Have the head magnafluxxed to make sure its worth rebuilding. Mike the crank to check for wear and roundness...might need to be turned. Do that before ordering bearing shells, to get correct size. Any idea on cam wear? Hand clutch should snap over center, not be mushy. Mostly, enjoy the D17- good nimble tractor.

quote]Thanks for the help Ill get it checked out , was told when I picked it up that it had been rebuilt about 2 years earlier .but will check it all out thank you once again .

Another thing to make sure of is to drive the liners out and make
sure the surface the liner o-rings sit on is smooth and not pitted.
Have fixed there two ways the right way is to have the block
bored and a bushing put in it. The other is not somthing you
want to do on somthing you will do more than drive in the
parade so to speak. Good luck.
