Ford 3600 Coil

Purchased a new coil for my 3600. The old one was labeled batt by one post which was hooked up coming in from the battery -- then to the distributor from the other unmarked post. The new coil is mark negative "-" and positive "+". Wiring diagrams I can find indicate that it should be pos from the battery and neg to the distributor. Is this correct?

Thanks

This holds true on any machine wit ha coil. What ever your battery ground is that is the side of the coil that goes to the distributor. So if - ground the - goes to the distributor

Thanks to both of you. I actually had no idea you could have a positively ground system. I am sure mine is negative, but I will double check.

Most Fords made before say 1960 where all + ground like say the 8N just as an example.

Then if you're sure your tractor battery has its NEG post connected to frame ground, the gents have you covered, + of coil wires to Ignition switch output while - of coil wires to distributor. The coil will still produce a spark wired either way, but its more efficient if wired correctly.

all ford diesels are 12v neg grnd

all ford gassers pre 65 models are + ground and 6v

all 65+ models ( not including late run 4 cyl pre 65 models ) are 12v neg ground.

Good info Soundguy, as I recall you're pretty good on Fords, so did the 8N use a Class A charging system while all others used a Class B??? (2N and 9 N???) You may have answered that before but I didnt save the thread.

I ask because I have an Exhibit for the Florida Flywheelers describing the Class A System and want to be able to tell folks some Fords (and some Massey Harris I believe) used Class B but I don't know which used which???

Seems like my old later thirties flathead V8 Ford cars with the front mount distributors (NOT the later 100 HP with regular distributors) used Class b charging????

Thanks for any help

8n's used a circuit. IE.. one side of field to armature, other side of field to field lug on genny, for reg to ground

in 53 with the NAA and everything up from there till ford went to alternators, was B circuit ( that includes the lucas electrics too ).

the 9n/2n 3rd brush jobs i guess you could lump in with B circuit, as the adjustrable brush grabbed power for field

ps have fun at the flywheelers. I used to go.. but it's a bit of a drive for me.. and I'm working alot now ( thankfully! )

I go every year (have on and off like 15 years) but for the first time next year I'm becoming an Exhibitor...

Not real accurate though since all, not most, ford gassers pre 65 are 6v,including late run prior model 4 clys post 65 and all diesel are 12v.

Does mot take much longer to be precise and correct vs general.

And I type on a phone too :)

Ah but when your not sure of the exact facts you have to do it in a general way. Oh and my phone is an old one and if I typed on a phone I would get a whole lot more words spelled wrong

i spell plenty wrong... i have to take my glasses off to see the phone or hold it way down.. either way a loosing battle.. :)
