Aluminum grill

I have a 1940 9n with the original aluminum grill, dash, shift cover, four spoked steering wheel, ect. I would like to know if the cast grill can be welded/repaired.

It can but it's not easy. The old cast aluminum is very pores and full of all kind of dirt and sand. I've seen a few of the cast dashes repaired but never a grill. If you take it someone to be welded make sure the understand how old and brittle it is. When I put my early 39 back together I bought a reproduction grill. It fit ok but not perfect. What number is yours?

Thanks, good advice. There is only one bar that is cracked, very close to the bottom, so I hoping I can keep it original. The serial #9n31350. The dog legs coming down from the hood are also alum. but the hood is steel.

I think the engine must have been changed in mine. My serial number is 27922. The only aluminum part I have is the round cover on the side right of the transmission. My dash is cast iron, with steel hood and vertical bar grill.

I'm new on this site ,so hope my pic come thru.

That is a really straight early 9N and that grill is defiantly worth trying to save. I think it should have had the smooth hub rear axles but I will have to look up when they went to the riveted ones. It's common to see one that's been changed as the cast hub broke often. If you don't have the original 2 rib rear fenders they show up for sale from time to time. Mine is #849 and I have a good friend that has # 16 the oldest one that cane be found. Of all of my family's Ford tractors ( we have 8 ) the early 9 is my favorite. Keep us posted on the restoration and the N board on the site is a wealth of knowledge especially Hcooke on the early N's

I have been in the welding business for over 35 years. I weld a lot of cast aluminum and I can tell you from my experience there is really no way to tell if it can be welded without trying. Take it to someone that is very experienced in TIG welding aluminum and has the proper equipment to weld it or you will end up with a piece of scrap.
