Grey ferguson tef20 hard to start and runs at full revs

Hello there.

I seem to be beat with my tef20. I have just got my engine back from being completely rebuilt and it got everything that was needed. I spent the last couple of nights getting it built back up and finally i was ready to start it last night after a year of waiting for the engine (was a long wait but the man was recommended to use by several people) anyway when i tried starting it there was no luck, which i thought strange as before the engine sent away it wasn't all that hard to start. After a good 2 minutes of turning the engine over and some heat she finally fired up with a serious cloud of smoke but she wouldn't ideal, it would just kept creeping up the revs although it did sound like there was air in the system as it was a inconsistent rev increase. Anyway now no matter what i do with the throttle the engine will still pick up the revs until it gets to max rpms. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Jonny.

disconnect the governor from the carb and run the carb butterfly by hand and see if she otherwise acts normal.

if so.. check out the gov!

( not uncommon for the first start on a rebuild to be a lil hard.. rings aren't set..e tc. etc. cyl wals clean.. etc.. )

Hi if my thinking is correct from what you say,
that tractors a diesel. if so it has a vacuum
controlled governor, similar to a fordson major
set up prior to the last of the super majors/
ford 5000 diesel when they changed to
mechanical type.

This system relies on sensing the vacuum
change in the intake manifold when you rev up
or shut down the throttle. on the rear end of
the injector pump you have a kinda cone shaped
housing, with hoses that run to the intake
manifold and a butterfly flap, controled by the
throttle linkage.
if the governor Diaphragm, in the pump housing
gets a hole in that will make the motor rev and
do goofy things, as will a leak on the vacuum
hoses. check those, and remove that cone shaped
aluminum end cap, thats held with 4 bolts on
the pump end.
I think like the major there is a damper spring
and things in there.so you might feel a little
resistance when you slack it off. I only ever
did one Fergie like this and that was about 25
years ago, so memory a little sketchy on it!
pay close attention when you get that cap off
what came from where so you know how it goes
back!. you will see a blackish brown leather
disc, in there that is still attached to the
fuel pump/ fuel control rack. check both sides
of it for a small hole or split. it should be
kinda oily/ greasy. that helps seal the leather
and keep it flexible. sometimes they dry out
and split. if you find a hole there thats
probably your issue, and that diaphragm needs
replacing.
Some times the rack in the pump can stick to
but that usually means it won't start at all.
Just another thought is the air cleaner, clean
and connected with the pre filter on, as on some majors with this
system that not being connected can cause high
revs also as it messes with the intakes sensing pressures.
if you don't find a problem with the
diaphragm or hoses come back and let us know,
and we cansee what else comes to mind on it.
Regards Robert
