8N Pinion Replacement

I am restoring an 1951 8N Ford and found chipped pinion teeth when replacing the lower lift arm studs, so I bought a good used ring and pinion. My question is, can the internal shaft that connects the transmission output shaft to the pinion splines move to allow removal of the pinion without separating the rear housing from the transmission housing? I didn't look the last time I was in the hydraulic section and figured someone would be familiar. This would be helpful for planning the job. Thanks.
