trans oil

I put six gallons of oil in the trans as per owners manual but level is not up to check plug. Am I missing something?

What are you missing well enough info for us to help you help your self.. Very hard to help you when all we know is your adding oil to some machine transmission and don't even know if it is a tractor car or truck

keep adding till it reaches the check plug.
The amount listed in a manual is just an approximate, it is never precise.

Factory operator's manual of an IT manual ? I wouldn't trust an IT manual.
As previously stated. Some information on the make and model would be of some assistance .
Are your pouring into a hydraulic system instead of a transmission ?
Are you expecting the oil to reach the fill port? Many tractors have the fill port several inches above the desired level.
Reservoir level maybe checked with a dipstick that you haven't found yet ?
