FARMALL ZENITH CARB.

Zenith Farmall A carb. Leaks.....new needle and seat, good float (no leaks), float not rubbing on sides of bowl. Float not binding on hinge. Works by hand and in glass jar. Any ideas? Embarrassed about this one! Hair line cracks in body? surfaces are flat. Also good seal on seat.

Is it a rubber tipped needle?? If it is you need to put a set in the rubber by setting the needle in the seat then tapping on it a few times till you can see a ring set in the rubber end.

Good idea. I would expect to do that with a steel needle. But the rubber? When I push on the needle it does stick a little. It does take very little pressure to seal. When the needle itself is upside down without the float it seals with a gas supply.

So does it drip sitting with the fuel on?

Only drip following a failed crank with the choke
on?

Drip and flood when idling?

Dripping fuel when sitting with the fuel valve on
is a common problem. I've has some that were only
solved with a fuel shut off solenoid valve. Not
many, but some defy all logic.

Dripping following cranking with the choke is
normal.

Flooding while running is unacceptable. Something
is wrong and will need to be corrected. Try
lowering the float, sometimes lower than
specified. Be sure the fuel supply is clean, all
screens in place and in good condition. A
microscopic piece of rust can hold the needle
valve open, even damage a new needle.

Have not gotten as far as to run the tractor. Clean carb. Have moved float down as far as I can. Still leaks. Everything is clean and new except for the carb. cast itself. Should be a 5 minute job as I have done this many times. This is a first.

I know some guys on this site don't like inline
filters but you might want to try one. Tractors
around here will get really fine rust in the tank.
So fine it will pass right through the brass
screen in the strainer. Rust in the fuel system
will cause all kinds of problems and make the carb
run over.
If it's not a rust problem. I'm guessing the float
lever needs adjusted so it shuts off the flow
sooner.

Clean both the NEW needle and seat with aerosol carb cleaner before installing and the needle WON'T stick. DO NOT attempt to "seat" the valve by tapping on it with a hammer. If you put a "ring" on that Viton tip, you have already shortened and compromised the life of the needle.

Probly a bad needle.
When they first came out with the (injection molded plastic/rubber) tips I had over a 50% frailer. I put the old solid needle in the new seat and solved the problem. The last few years it has not been as big of a problem for me. A slight sink (not fully packed into the mold) would be very hard to detect but could cause a void in the seat area.
