9n rear axle, setting wheel bearing clearance

I have a ford 9n that i installed sure seals on both sides ( due to severe oil leakage ). I removed probably 6 or 7 shims total, I only put 4 new ones back, the thin paper kind. Now I have probably 1/16 inch end play on my axles. I think that 4 shims is the minimum that I can put to still seal everything, but I'm worried about the 1/16 end play. I did not check end play before I took it apart.
When comparing the old shims to the new ones, the new ones total thickness is about half of what I took out.
Has any one experienced this before, if so what was done about the end play?

You are SURE it is a 9N, correct? (8N's have hubs splined to the axles and there can be some other issues with those.)

I'm not sure what is going on... a bad bearing or unusual wear on the end of the axle(s), but the shop manual calls for ENDPLAY of .002" to .006", on the bearings.
IDENTIFY if youre not sure

I'm sure its a 9n or 2n, doesnt have the splined hub with the nuts on the end of axle. i was wandering about removing the shims and using gasket maker only, would this be thinner than the shims? I didnt remove and check the bearings since i was installing sure seals. they could be worn. Just curious about what to try next to reduce the end play. If anyone wqants to see pics i can post some, its assembled now, but still no wheel and tires on it

Well, if the bearings are OK and the bearings and collars are pressed on the axles all the way, you should NOT be having that much endplay.

The bearings seemed ok, its hard to inspect them while installing sure seals, because you do not remove them and can only see the end of the rollers. I did not remove them so they should be pressed on all the way. I do agree the worn bearings could be the cause.
I guess I'll pull the bearings and races out and change them and see if it tightens everything up. The end of the axles looked OK to me when I had them out.
I had just wandered if anyone else had had this issue, I saw plenty of post about no play in the axle bearings but no post on way too much.
Thanks

On the other hand, while 1/16" (.0625") of endplay is "out of spec", and will give the purists a STROKE, those bearings are BIG and slow-turning, and if you run it "as-is", likely it will outlast you and I!

It MAY have been that way all it's life, who knows.

The DOWNSIDE is that the seals may not be s effective with the extra play in the bearings.
