John Deere 3020 - Can I Do It?

A friend of mine has a John Deere 3020 he wants to have restored. Knowing that I have restored 2 cars he asked if I'd want to do his tractor for him. My question is, will I be able to do it? I know very little about farming and tractors, but feel like I am quite mechanically inclined. There were many things I did on my cars (a '64 MGB and an '85 Mazda RX-7), including learning how to do a complete rebuild of the rotary engine on the Mazda. But are there things I'll run into that require special knowledge and/or tools that would make it difficult for me to take on this project?

Thanks for any feedback!

Rich

It would depend on it's outward appearance/condition of sheet metal and if any engine/internal/transmission repairs are needed, as well as HIS definition of "restored".

To SOME, that means every bearing and seal (etc., etc.) has been replaced and the engine has been re-sleaved and any block/crank/head work needed has been done, as well as installing 4 new tires.

To others, a paint job with a 4" brush is a "restoration"!

Wonder where your buddy is on all that?

We've not gotten far enough along in our discussions to know for sure what he wants out of it, but my impression is that he will want everything to operate correctly, and he'll want it to look like knew. My main concerns are things like hydraulics, which I know nothing about, and wondering if there will be special tools and skills required to disassemble and reassemble. I'm used to being thorough...I had every single nut and bolt off my MGB when I restored it (I need to update this website...links after May 31, 2001 don't work: http://173.22.101.202/rdfrahm/64mgb/index.html), and either restored or replaced every piece.

Thanks,
Rich
