8N trans question

I've been trying to get my Dad's 8N running, it's been sitting for about 3 years, after a carb kit and some general cleanup I have it running pretty good except for a choke issue which I will post later. My question is 1st , 3rd and rev work fine but 2nd and 4th are not. They did in the past. I pulled the shifter cover and don't see any excessive wear, really looks like new gears. I have been searching different sites but can't find this issue. Any thoughts on what to look for? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Will it not go in to gear at all or does it jump out? If it wont go in
you could have a shift rail or detention ball rusted up.

had to work late tonite so didn't get to go to the shop, but I think I remember seeing a rusted spring under the shifter cover when I removed it, didn't know or think about it but sounds like a good place to start. Thanks

The rusted spring/detention ball looks to be for 1st and 3rd and is working but looks like bad news,,the u shaped ( sorry don't know correct term) bracket that fits into the flat notch on the shift rail on bottom right side is bent towards the middle and not sitting in the notch or on the pivot pin. I did get it back on the pin but it's nowhere near the notch. What would have caused this and is there more to repairing this than just replacing the "bracket" ? Here is a link to a picture of it.

ot any good news for you. The "u shaped bracket" is the 2/4 shift plate & in order to remove it, I am relatively sure that the 1/3 shifter rail has to come out & to get that 1/3 rail out, you will need to split the transmission from the rear part of the tractor. As it is that bent plate can not move the 2/4 shift rail which in turn can not move the fork/2/4 coupler. How & why it got bent? No idea unless just a very heavy hand. Just to check & see if 2/4 work, you should be able to get transmission into neutral & then with a pry bar, move the 2/4 rail & fork/coupler into 2nd or 4th. Just be sure that you don't get transmission into more than one gear at any time that you apply power.

Thanks for the info, yes I can get into 2nd and 4th with a pry bar with no trouble. I removed the 2 pivot pins/bolts on each side and rotated the 2/4 shift plate around to look at the ends,,looking for a sign of what could have caused the plate to get bent, nothing that I can see ??? The left side appears to parallel with the 1/3 plate and the right side is bent inward as in not as wide of a u shape. That is 1/4" plate metal,,,it would take a lot of force to bend it and I would think there should be some kind of " blunt force trauma " Changing out the part isn't the problem but not knowing what caused it and how to prevent it could be. I think I can straighten it by using the 1/3 as a guide,, is there any reason not to try? Thanks

ive it a shot. FYI, there is no 1/3 plate, rather you are comparing to the reverse plate. :)

Just a follow up, I removed the bolt from the top rail/fork and was able to slide it back enough to Get the 2/4 plate out from the top, the reverse plate would not come out so using a square and anvil was able to true it up, reinstalled and it is shifting into all gears for now, at least while not running! Still working on the Zenith choke trouble, does anyone know if the Zenith reversible linkage carb comes with two choke shafts and springs? Does the spring hold the choke in the open or closed position? This is holding in the closed/choked position. Sorry , got off topic.

The Zenith on my 9n I think was made in 92. The
spring should hold the choke open. The lever on mine
is held to the shaft with a nut. You can remove the
lever and swap it to reverse it's operation.

Could be your carb is for a different tractor like a
farmall A or Allis B.

The lever on this one is such a tight fit it could be a press on but it does have a roll pin, I have taken it off and rotated it 180* but it didn't help and the spring still holds it in the closed position. The zenith says " with reversible linkage " so I'm thinking it may have come with two choke shafts and or springs. I have looked on line but can't find any more info/instructions referring to the linkage.
