Timing is just a hair off on mine. Been screwing with it for 3 years. Got it started by pull starting it, and it's ALMOST started today with the hand crank, but need some tips (i.e.- trouble shooting, how to start, etc)

It sound like you have a hand crank start with a magneto.....correct?

If so, here is what I did. I had the magneto off of the tractor. Pulled the plugs so I didn"t have to fight against the compression. With my finger over the number one plug hole I slowly pulled it around till I felt it starting to make compression. Then very slowly pulled it a little at a time till I could see the "center" mark on the flywheel through the hole in the bell housing. Looking straight at the cover on the magneto it was numbered "1" on what would be the upper right pole. I put a plug wire and plug in that hole and grounded the body of the plug against the magneto case and slowly turned the mag drive clockwise till I saw a spark. The drive on the mag and on the tractor should both now be horizontal. Put the mag back on and install the rest of the wires 1-2-4-3 in a clock wise order. That should get you really close.
