Temperature Sending Unit

ALMF35

New User
On my MF35 I just put in a new Temperature Unit.
Ordered it from YDT.
Today it smoked and arced a small spark from the dial where it touches the dash.
I ran the capillary line down the engine where clips were, but the cable is too long.
I looped it 3 times and ran it up. Does current run through this assembly?
It touched metal and wires where it went up under the dash.

Now my Ignition switch wont act like a switch.
I can mash the start button without a key and it cranks, with smoke...
I disconnected the positive cable and quit for the day

No, no current should run through the cap tube.
Sounds like it touched a hot wire and shorted
something out.

You did the right thing disconnecting the battery!

You'll need to carefully inspect everything under
the dash for damage. There could be damage to the
wiring harness.

Sorry, but most likely the new gauge is ruined.

Likely, your battery is "grounded" to the "dash" (or something in contact with ir), and there is a bad connection between the "dash" and the tractor chassis/engine/starter.

The mech temp gauge and cap tube/bulb is intimately connected to the engine and provides an alternate ground path, which explains what you are seeing.

(NO current should be flowing through the cap tube.)

I'm sorta surprised the ADVANCED one has never encountered this???

When wrenching on the positive terminal on a 100 series Ford it is very easy to hit the temp gauge terminal and burn it. You most likely had the capillary in contact with a terminal.
