Power King Economy Transmission Leaking Heavy

I was wondering if anyone could help me? My 1973 Power King Economy tractor is heavily leaking transmission fluid. I mow with it all the time and have not had any problems. I put more in, but it just leaks out. It seems to be leaking in front of the shifter housing box, where I can't see. What might this be and do I have to pull the motor forward to get the transmission out? Thanks

Yes you have to remove the engine to get the transmission out. For parts list and exploded view of the transmission go to www.powerkingtractor.com , you maybe able to order parts on line at that site or with the part number you can call/ contact

Does your tractor have a sheet metal tunnel covering the transmission and drive line? If it does that will have to come off to get to the transmission. How are you filling the transmission? There is a plug on the side of the transmission to put the fluid in. I run straight STP from Walmart in all of mine. If you are removing the top cover shifting lever unit from the transmission, your problem may be overfilling the transmission. Take out the plug on the bottom of the transmission and drain it, put the plug back and fill the transmission with one half pint of STP which will bring it up to 1"below the fill plug on the side. If you put too much in, it will run out the front of the transmission. If you use STP, it will help with shifting the tractor by slowing down the gears in the transmission faster.

Thanks, I have removed all the metal from around the transmission and unbolted the transmission. It started pouring out fluid all on it's own all of a sudden. I refilled it to see if I could tell where it was leaking out, but can't really tell. Yes, I used the fill plug on the side. Will a bad gasket cause this type of leak?

Is it leaking from the front or the back of the trans? There is no seal in the front of the trans tho I have replaced most of the front bearings in mine with a sealed bearing There is an oil retaining washer but unless the trans is overfilled there should be no problem from the front. The rear of the trans has a sealed bearing which could fail and cause a leak. The top cover has a gasket which could leak also. The only other place it could leak would be from a cracked case which could be caused by over tightening the fill plug or the drain plug and that would be a visible leak after cleaning the trans.

Doesn't the Economy use a 1940s car trans from a
Crosley? If so - parts are easy to get from many
auto parts stores.

It sounds like your leak my really be the rear main engine seal. which would explain it Pouring out on it's own all of a sudden when you unbolted the tranny from the motor.

Hi, I have taken the transmission completely out. Should the center shaft be loose and woobly or should it be tight with no give? thanks

It will be a little wobbly because it's the shaft is not one solid shaft from front to back but not very much. There are 13 roller bearings between the front and back half of those shafts. If they are not there and in good shape you will get a lot of wobble. My guess is you need new bearings in the trans. Take out the four bolts that hold the cover on, remove the cover. Then wiggle the shaft, you will be able to see where the front and rear halves come together and that is where the front and rear bearings come together.
