8n Cranking Slow

Hey guys, I've got a 1948 6v 8n that is having issues turning over. It has brand new plugs, battery, and the alternator was checked and fine. Over the last few years the batteries could never stay charged, always having to jump start each time. Recently while mowing the pasture it cut out and won't start. It will crank slowly but just sounds like it's not getting enough juice to turn it over. (I know the 6v are slow cranking) The starters were rebuilt few years back and I just can't seem to find the issue. If anyone could help if appreciate it. These tractors are my main tool around the farm.

Thanks, Max

so.. what kind of 6v alt does it have?

still positive ground?

have you checked bat voltage during cranking?

have you cleaned up the cable ends, and ground locations.. are they good 1/0 cables and not auto 4ga cables?

Install 00 battery cables and don't have them any longer than needed. Clean all areas where the cables are connected including where the battery is grounded. You can install a master switch that will isolate the battery from being grounded. The military vehicles have master switches. If the tractor isn't used often I would pull the ground cable. If that alternator has an internal regulator it maybe the battery drain problem. Hal

Sounds like you have a current leak. You can track it down by wiring a test light in circuits one at a time.
