Ford 801 diesel tractor has fluctuating high to low idle

I have a Ford 801 diesel tractor that I use to mow the pasture and perform some box blading. Lately, and not every time, when I start the tractor with the throttle in a normal starting position, the tractor will suddenly go into an extremely high idle. If I adjust the throttle, the idle will go so low it will stall if I do not adjust the throttle again. I engage the pto and begin mowing and most of the time it will suddenly return to the proper idle and I can mow as normal. Other times I have to constantly move the throttle up and down until it returns to the regular idle. Anyone else have a similar issue and what it may entail to repair? Thanks for any replies!

Classic symptoms of RoosaMaster governor ring failure. Depending on who is commenting, it's either a fairly easy DIY project, or a job best left to the pros at a diesel pump/injector shop. not many repairs I don't do myself, but injection pump repair is near the top of the list of things I pay others to do.

What would be an approximate price I might pay for this repair? I'm a widow, just don't want to get ripped off.

Your're probably needing $30 in parts and two
hours labor with the pump on the workbench. I'm
not counting removing it and reinstalling. Find
the right person and that two hours labor might
cost you less then $75. Send to pump shop and
don't be surprised if you get charged $800. The
injection pump is no more complicated then some
automotive carburetors I've seen. The difficulty
lies in a general lack of knowledge, service data,
and parts availability. Also on some apps a few
special tools are needed. Not on your Ford,
though.

Dieseltech is a good compromise between the $50.00 DIY that you can't do, and the $800.00 shop charge. He did a good job on my 901 pump, solved the problem.

Just wanted to give an update.... Dieseltech repaired my pump! Did a great job, very reasonable, and fast!!!! I had a friend and my son remove the pump, took about 30 minutes, most time consuming part was lining up the timing marks. Other than that it was pretty easy. Got it back on the tractor and it's running better than ever, thanks again everyone for all the info!!!!!
