Farmall H Switch

Experts, ;) I purchased a Farmall H circa 1950 I think and it didn"t have the light switch when I got it. I would like to put one in, but don"t know how to tell if I need a 3 position or 4 position switch. How would I know? Here"s some info on the electrical that I know: 6 volt, Positive ground, Distributor not magneto. Forward lights, but may have had a work light, I don"t know. Been painted (several times) so there"s no sticker on the switch box anymore. I"ve included a link to some pictures, may or may not help.

Sorry, seems the photos didn't attach... try this link:

if it has a cut out relay instead of a bigger voltage regulator, then you want the 4 position light switch. low and high charge, and dim and bright on the lights. if you have a normal type voltage regulator, then the 3 position switch is the one you want. off-dim-bright.

I don't have permission to view the pics, however to add just a bit to Glenster:

The older Cutout Relay (2 or 3 terminal) systems had the LHDB (Low Charge, High Charge, Dim Lights, Bright Lights) 4 position switches........ On those the Generators FLD post wired to to that LHDB switch.

The later full Fledged Voltage Regulator (3 or 4 terminal) systems had the Gennys FLD wired to the FLD terminal on the VR and the light switch was just Off Dim Bright.

Bob M or Jim might have to correct or confirm this, I'm knee deep in theory but NOT the IHC experts those two dudes are...

OK, so I want 3 position if I have a good ol' voltage regulator and a 4 position with a cut-out. I guess that makes sense. So, now I have to figure out if I have a cut-out or VR!

Thanks Guys. It looks like I've got a voltage regulator. There are 3 poles on one side, and 1 on the other. Looking at pictures of VRs and COs, it looks like the VRs. Inside there are 2 electromagnet relays. Voltage Regulator, right?

SOUNDS RIGHT with 4 terminals its a full fledged Voltage Regulator, the 4 terminals being:

BAT (L)OAD FLD GEN/ARM and often the one off by itself or underneath is the GEN/ARM terminal.

The coils inside, one is the Cutout Relay, the other the Field Current Control Relay

You're getting there
