Farmall 504 Problem

1964 Farmall 504 with a Zenith carb. The tractor idles at 550 and runs great at slow speeds/low rpm (under 1800). With the throttle down it coughs misses at backfires.

The fuel is good, the fuel lines are not obstructed, the sediment bowl/screen is clean and the fuel filter is new. I even removed the fuel shut off valve and in-line filter to ensure they were not the problem. Have recently changed the needle and seat in the carb and the oil bath air filter has been cleaned and the air passage is open to the carb.

The plugs, points, distributor cap are all good (plugs gapped at .023 and points at .020) and the engine is in time.

I just completed spring haying with this tractor. It pulled a haybine and round baler. I parked it and the problem began when I started it after a week or so. Sounds to me like a fuel supply problem but I can't figure it out. What am I missing?? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Check the side play in the distributor shaft, and the centrifugal weights. There will be some side play but not much. The weights should be free and spring out and back when released.
