"Ya might as well go POSTAL on us and tell us WHY you heed to replace the bearing, and REALLY go off-track and tell us what tractor you are working with!

Sorry about that ..

I have a Ford 800 series tractor with a 172 cu in motor. I call it the tractor from hell because if it can break, it will on this tractor. My mechanic told me that the bearing on the front wheel was going bad, so I was just trying to get some pointers on replacing it. Thanks in advanced..

Well, there"s TWO tapered roller bearing assemblies in the hub, an inner and an outer, each consisting of a "cup" and a "cone".

Safely support tractor, remove wheel, remove hub cap, remove cotter pin, then nut (NOT shown in parts breakdown), then hub can be pulled of of axle to examine bearings.

Might only need to clean them up, repack with grease and replace seal, re-install, and adjust.

Or, one or both bearing assemblies may need to be replaced.

Here"s a link to an article about car front wheel bearings, which are pretty much the same "cept for the car having brakes.

When you are done, adjust the castle nut to leave a TINY amount of play in the bearings, they do NOT get pre-loaded (as some folks think).

Bob has it pretty well nail down. If I may add one thing, when you clean the parts, look for any "pitting" in either the bearing cup or on the rollers themselves. If pitting is evident, replace the parts. If no pitting is evident, chances are,the bearing can be packed with grease and re-installed with no problems.
