Delco type 24v alternator hookup

Hi all,
Firstly, sorry to post a non-tractor question here. But I do have an alternator that seems to be appropriate for tractors.

I've converted many an old car from generator to these simple Delco units in 12v, and I've made standalone battery chargers using the same. Need to do so again.

But this time, it's 24v to charge a battery bank. I got a new alternator (10-si, I think), but the pigtail plugin has a 3rd spade pin. I don't know what to do with it. The two pin pigtail fits connections 1 and 2, but what the heck is that 3rd one for?

Pictured at top is 12v unit from a car, and bottom is the new 24v unit that I want to hook up to a small engine to charge batteries. The image can be seen here: http://i.imgur.com/DO0VAWG.jpg

Thanks, and again, apologies for off topic

The third tab is connected to one of the stator leads and provides an AC output, typical used to drive a tachometer.

You can ignore it for your application.

Thank you! I posted my question to an old car board (Volvos, natch), and someone suggested that as a possibility.

Thanks for confirming! Really appreciate it.
