1970 MF 135 - main seal replacement

A good friend left the sate for work and gave me his 1970 MF 135 Perkins diesel. It is not in the best of shape, but it runs. I noticed the bottom cover of the tranny case is missing, and after a few minutes of running a nice oil leak starts dripping out. There is a cotter pin in this area also which I have no idea why its even there. Anyway, I have parts and service manuels (From Jensales) but can't identify the main seal. I did see a drawing with the cotter pin....still don't have an idea. Can anyone help with how to change this and what it looks like?
Thanks
P.s. I live in Alaska and have yet to find a MF Dealer

Oh where to start, The cotter pin you are referring to it doing its job. It lets out any oil that escapes in that area. Your oil leak is from one of two sources, the engine rear crankshaft oil seal or the transmission input shaft seal. Either one will require the engine be removed to replace the seal. There fore I would replace both while you have it split apart along with checking over the clutch and pressure plate assembly. Your book should have detailed instructions on both under the engine and transmission sections. Take a flat piece of steel and make a cover for the bottom of the transmission to keep out the debris, it will shorten the life of the clutch. FYI if you post down in the Massey-Harris & Massey-Ferguson, you will get more help..

If you want to positively identify which fluid is leaking, auto parts stores sell dye for oil. Just put it in only where the oil goes and see if the dye comes out.

As Jo said the cotter pin needs to be there, it simply keeps the hole from plugging with dirt. You don't need to remove the motor. The process is called splitting, and involves some disassembly in order to be able to roll one part away from the other. It is not as bad as it may sound and there is plenty of help here to guide when you get into it. A really big help that you won't find here is the HoboNC splitting support. It is simply a trailer jack bolted to the side of the rear housing, that makes the job easier than using a floor jack or engine lift or gantry or whatever else you may want to use.
