Super A Steering Worm Bearing

I would like to know the general procedure for replacing the Steering Worm Shaft bearing in the steering box.

Is this bearing a press fit ??

Jac, remove your steering wheel nut, remove the steering wheel, remove the steering wheel key, remove the pipe plug from the bolster right in front of the steering shaft, then wind the steering shaft right out of the bolster housing. Now you can remove the cotter pin and remove the bearing, reverse the procedure to install.
That being said, the worm shaft bearing, in my opinion, does not take the wear like the larger sector shaft bearing. Beyond that, both shafts have bushings and seals, which can be changed without much trouble, however, I prefer to remove the bolster and do the whole rebuild all at once, two bushings, two bearings, two seals, and one gasket.
Sometimes when the steering has play, and I assume that is your trouble, the pitman arm is loose, usually, in my experience, the larger sector bearing and the bronze bushings are worn. Then again, the sector shaft gear may be worn, and they are available new, though pricey. Let me know if I can help

Charlie -

Thanks for the reply. This tractor was used pretty hard by the two or more owners that had it before it came into my life. I have always had trouble with the steering and had tried to get the cast nut off of the steering box before but it was frozen and I was afraid to break it so I have been making do.

I have to do something now. I have discovered that the steering arm was sometimes in the past welded to the sector bearing shaft.

Question - Should the Steering worm shaft be able to screw out of the sector bearing and should the shaft be able to be removed from the front??

When I first removed the bearing retainer nut I discovered that there was no bearing present.

Also after the steering bearing retainer nut was removed the steering shaft will move forward

I have managed to get a bearing and the keefer nut back on the shaft but now I cannot get the bearing to advance into its pocket in the steering box.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Jac, you asked...
Question - Should the Steering worm shaft be able to screw out of the sector bearing and should the shaft be able to be removed from the front??
Answer: the worm shaft will screw out from the sector GEAR(not bearing) and can be completely removed out the front of the bolster.
If you cannot get the shaft and bearing back in, try screwing the shaft back up into the housing when the worm reaches the sector gear.
Considering the welded pitman arm, and the strange missing worm bearing, maybe you might be better off locating a used bolster.
