head bolts are stuck

I got my block and head back from machine shop and was putting the head bolts in. I have two that stopped halfway. I can't get them to go in, or come back out. tried some pb blaster, and even lightly heated the block with a little propane torch. they won't budge. I'm using two nuts jammed together as my turning point and they just turn on the threads. any suggestions? I'm stuck, literally.

you can try a stud removal/installer tool. sears have em, also napa, or any tool truck. heres a pic

I would take it back to your machine shop. If the threads are messed up you may need helicoils.
Buy new head bolts. Hal

HOPEFULLY can back them out!

Yous should have "chased" the threads BEFORE starting assembly, them made SURE the holes are clean, ESPECIALLY if they are "blind holes" because oil, dirt or debris left in a blind hole and then compressed by the bolt or stud can actually crack the casting.

Machinist could cut them off and drill/mill out the remains rather than forcibly unscrewing them and screwing up the threads.

get some cardboard to cover the head and block deck.. poke hole in it and slide it over the 2 studs weld one of the nuts to each stud.. use an impact wrench.. and set it low.. and let it hammer them out. that USUALLY will pull em out without breaking them.. and there should be no threads pulling out if they screwed in fine that far.. the heat from welding usually helps too.

after you get them both out. pull head. chase threads and clean all holes.. as mentioned.. blind ones will hydrolock and lock up a stud or cause a bust out or crack.

i never re-use studs or headbolts unless the are new, as in I just put them in last month.. etc..

Thank you all.
I got a stud extractor at napa this afternoon and the combination of that and a pipe wrench they came out just fine.

So my next question is where do I find new Studs?
it's for a 1935 model D Part number 1254R
3/4 x 7 7/16

Should I get new nuts as well? I have the new lead washers, but not sure if I should use new nuts as well.

It was also suggested that I put a little RTV on the threads as they do contact the water jacket. Good Call?

I would run a tap trough the bolt holes and clean the studs with a wire wheel on the bench grinder
Nothing wrong with reusing the studs as long as they torque properly after the head is on and don't feel spongy which indicates stretch(i have done so many times without issues)
I use a couple wraps of teflon tape or tread sealer on these studs that are open to a water jacket.
I also oil the stud nuts and contact area of the head.
Nuts have to spin on easy all the way without binding to get a proper torque.

my 2c
