Stuck Case Diesel engine

I just bought a case 630 with 188D engine. The owner bought it from another farmer which told him it had a stuck engine? I have not put a battery in it yet or tryed towing it to turn over the engine yet. Any thoughts if it is indeed stuck. Also, I think I heard the 188D engine requires 30 wt oil?
Thanks DB

Depends on why it's stuck... Big difference in stuck and locked up!

If it's stuck from rust in the cylinders, that means water or coolant got in there and stuck it.

Water from rain down the exhaust or a flood? Coolant from a bad head or gasket? That may or may not break loose and run again, just don't know enough history to even guess.

If it locked up running, that's not good! Could cut open the oil filter, see what's in there.

The 188D has case iron wet sleeves and could be stuck do to condensation or for many other reasons. You will probably break or bend something if you try to free it by towing. Pull the injectors and try to see inside or stick a wire down in the cylinders, they may be full of water.
As previously mentioned, could be locked up do to a mechanical failure also.
good luck

Dick, I got two Fordson Diesels unstuck from sitting too long by removing the injectors. Dumped a cup of marvels mystery oil in each cyl and using a wrench on the end of the crankshaft. Slowly pushing and pulling then a little movement then more and more the I was able to to rotate the engine over using the fan blades. One has a bad engine now and other runs good. These were stuck from sitting and I knew why they got that way. Yours may not be the case. Pull the oil drain ANY coolant come out ? Try and find a mechanic that has a camera scope to inspect the cylinders and decide from there.

Better than pulling is to apply some patience. As Husker said remove injectors and install penetrating oil, and as Dennis said pulling can cause damage. Instead put it in gear, chock one rear and jack the other up then rock the tire periodically allowing penetrating time.

I wish I knew more about the tractors history. I was told the engine was stuck, but I have not confirmed that it is. I'll do the normal checks and if it is stuck, I'll try something in the cylinders to try to loosen the piston rings. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for all the advise.

As the guys said when you posted on Case forum, bite the bullet, pull the head and pan and see what you have to deal with. Diesels are not so forgiving as gassers are. When pulling the head, be sure to remove the water pump and remove the hollow bolt behind it that seals the gasket between the head and timing cover. Most non Case people don't know that the bolt is there.
