EZGO clutch

I have an older 2cycle EZGO golf car that I use on the farm.
The clutch on the engine is not moving. I tried oiling the shaft so the sheaves will move in and out. Will not move. I need to remove the clutch. Does the motor have to be removed to do this or can it be done in place?
Can the clutch be rebuilt?
Thanks
Brian

You can make your own clutch puller, and should be able to remove the clutch without pulling the engine. The bolt that holds the clutch on is threaded into the crankshaft. Remove it. The clutch housing has a set of bigger female threads in it. They are maybe 1/2 or 5/8 fine thread. Find a bolt to fit those threads. Bolt can be 2 inches or less in length. Then get a piece of smooth rod slightly smaller than the bolt you took out of the crankshaft. Using something for a depth gage measure and cut the rod so that it bottoms out in the crankshaft and protrudes up into the big threads slightly.

Put rod into hole, thread big bolt in and you can 'push' the clutch off of the tapered crankshaft. I have used an air impact wrench or a 16" or so breaker bar. You have to figure out a way to hold the clutch and keep it from turning during this process.

I am sure you can Google EZGO clutch removal also. The ready made puller toll is about $35. I hope my reply made sense.

When you consider the time and cost of parts rebuilding it, you could find a used one for less. We have found this out working on carts at the local golf course. New ones will set you back $150-$350, depending on the source. You will find most likely that the clutch weights and ramp buttons are hanging in grooves that are worn in the faces of the sheave in side. If this is the case you have to replace or remachine the sliding surface on the sheaves inner side.
You will be wise to find a book on it. There are springs compressed under snap rings on most golf cart clutches.
Sometimes when you pull them off the engine shaft you will find they are filled with dust, dirt and trash that will not let them slide in or out. Cleaning them may get you back going for a while.

On the 2 cycle E-z Go engines, it is a good idea to change the crankshaft oil seal while the clutch is off.

Try looking on various golf cart forums for parts and advice. One site that is good is this one. Buggies Gone Wild

When you reinstall a clutch on these engines, clean the inner and outer tapers off good and lightly oil both sides with some very light oil and DO NOT USE ANTISIEZE OR GREASE ON THE TAPER!
