the shifter goes to all posisions but only a clicking sound pto also does not work. do i have to split the tractor and rebuild the transmission or is there a simpler fix i have a 9n

Most likely the problem is in the clutch. But, just to satisfy any curiosity, you could pull the inspection covers and take a look, see if anything is moving. If nothing is moving with the transmission in gear, the problem is in the clutch.

Yes the tractor will have to be split but the transmission will not need to come apart unless there is some unusual problem found when you get it apart.
