John deere G governor problems

I was running the ole girl through.the local parade and from the inside of the governor housing a ping occurred like a bolt or nut hitting the side of the housing, followed by a whining grinding noise. When I got home I opened the housing to Check to see if any oil came out there was none, and the plate to the housing felt as if it has pressure behind it like a spring or something was about to pop out. My question is what kind of problems will I run into and where would a good place to start be?

NOT sure what you've got going on, but the spring at the RH governor bearing has pushed the shaft away from the magneto (slotted drive) and if you bolt the LH cover back on the governor and the mag drive doesn't mesh up, things are gonna get UGLY!

There are a few things that could of happened. The left hand bearing could have come apart causing the fan shaft gears to no longer mesh correctly, the inside governor lever is held on the shaft with two 1/4 inch mach. screws, one of them could have loosened up. there is also two weights that spin around shaft, held on with a small shaft and cotter pins, which could have come loose. Like others have said, there is a very strong spring on right hand side that keeps pressure on left hand sides bearing, which also keeps the cam to governor gears in mesh, suppose spring could have broke also but not likely. I"d say your looking into a governor teardown unless it's the bearing on left hand side and you haven"t torn other stuff up . hope this helps
