John Deere B

I just got my John Deere model B running. It runs at really fast rpm and runs irregularly every so often. Should I adjust my carburetor and check my magneto? What else could be causing it to do that? Thanks!

I had a John Deere one time that ran irregular all the time. Seemed as if I never could get it to run right. It would only run on a couple cylinders. I finally just got rid of it. Sold it to a guy that only farmed half the time. Worked out pretty good for him.

Is the gov working right? Mine was dry, not getting oil and ran way too fast. Found a plugged oil hole, hope that fixes it.

It idles down a little and then kicks back up like
the governor is worn. I adjusted the stop screw but
have yet to see if that made any difference. It
also smokes a lot when it runs. I hope I don"t have
problems internally.

check first to make sure the throttle linkages are free and not binding, a common problem is the cotter pin at carb. Could be a weak speed control spring. A governor works by using the centrifugal force of the two weights to slow the engine down, not speed it up, so if the weights are not moving properly in the governor which in turn controls the movement of throttle. Make sure your linkages are adjusted properly too, 1/2 hole short at full throttle. hope this helps
