Bobcat 310 Replacement Fuel Tank

I’ve posted this question on other sites and have been surprised to see no response, so, with the good responses I’ve had from this community, I’m re-posting.

I have a Bobcat 310 that I picked up for scrap price – it needs a cosmetic restoration, but everything works great after replacing the coil, points, and condenser.

However, the fuel tank started to rust out and the previous owner just connected an external fuel tank above the battery. Call me paranoid, but with a fuel tank around exhaust and a battery (the tank is metal), I’d prefer to relocate the fuel source back to where it was originally under the engine.

I talked with my Bobcat dealer and found out that Bobcat still makes a fuel tank for these old thing – for $750!! He also claims there are no aftermarket tanks for these machines – which after searching the web and posting the question, he might be right.

So I’m basically down to building my own tank at this point as I refuse to pay 4 times more for a 6 gallon fuel tank than I did the machine. However, I would really prefer to put in a poly tank to prevent future rusting issues as the machine will be spending a lot of time outside exposed to the elements. I have to believe that someone out there has been through the same thing as this isn’t an uncommon issue.

Any ideas guys? I’m not looking for a drop-in replacement, but something that will fit the awkward wedge-shaped cavity. Any help would be great, I’m just not having any luck with finding a suitable, replacement tank that I could get 4-6 gallons out of. Thanks!
