Hi, New to forum. I have a 1957 Case 300 Diesel utility tractor with a leaking transmission seal at he brake housing. I have remove the housing and the disc brakes, Unable to remove the plate were the seal is. Is there any trick to removing the plate to replace the oil seal?

Any help would be great. R/ Mark DeBoer

You don't need to remove the bearing quill to replace the seal. Carefully drill a couple of holes just big enough to screw a 1/4" lag screw in, and then hook a slide hammer to the lag screw head and pull the seal out. If you don't have a slide hamer you can figure a way to pry on the screw head to get the seal out. When you install the new seal cover the splines with duct tape so you don't cut the lip on the seal.
If the splined shaft has very noticable play in it you may have to remove the quill and remove some shimes. Bare in mind these shims are used to set preload on the bearings and also set the ring and pinion backlash. There are two counter sunk philips head screws that hold the quill in place.
Your 57 300 diesel is a bit of a rare tractor with a Continental Diesel in it.
Hop down to the Case board for more info., and post some pics. Everyone there would be interested in seeing it, and helping you out.

Thank You Loren,

I have already removed the two counter sunk screws. I was trying to pry on the bearing carrier plate. The shims are now out of alignement to the bolt holes. Should i pull the bearing plate off and replace the o-ring. Bearing plate does not move at all. Is the o-ring keeping it from moveing?

The bearing quill is a machine fit into the trans. housing. It will bind easily when you pry on one side or the other. You will just have to work it out by prying on both sides.
