Old style Briggs 5HP carb question

I want to rebuild my carb and clean it properly. It has the two tubes that go into the tank, a long one (brass tube off the carb then a plastic part with screen) and a short one (all plastic with screen). I understand their purpose but what I don"t know is how to remove them, especially the short one so I can be sure to get the passage clean. I tried to unscrew the longer tube"s plastic part and it will barely rotate with enough effort I"m scared of wrecking it. The short one is locked. Should I leave well enough alone and just shoot carb cleaner through them or ?? I appreciate any help!

My advice is don't try to get them out. Use a good spray carb cleaner and make sure all orifices are clear. Most important, make sure you use a new, soft, flexible diaphragm in that carb. They only cost a couple of dollars.

A guy gave my kids a go cart and what I described above is all that it needed. The screens on the pickup tubes were 'gunked up' but the carb cleaner cut it right off.

Garry is right. They can be removed and replaced, but I have recently read of problems in doing so. A good cleaner should clear the screens and other passages and any time a carb. of this type is disassembled, replace the diaphragm. If you anticipate doing much cleaning/repair I would suggest you purchase a basic Briggs & Stratton service manual.

Leave them alone. I was going to replace one last week on an engine I was working on. Looks like the new plastic tubes are a little too small to go on the brass pipe. A person could probably soften the plastic in hot water and then get it on but I didn't try it. I assume they are new non-fit parts made in china. The only reason to replace is if the tube is cracked. Just run spray carb cleaner on the screen and down the tube and blow it out.

No need to remove them. Remove the mixture screw, diaphragm and spring and shoot carb cleaner in all the little holes (wear a face shield) carb cleaner may shoot out where you don't expect it. Really the biggest job is getting the gas tank clean, both the main and secondary (the main tank is the hard one). Usually the biggest problem with those is that water gets in the main tank then gets moved to the secondary tank (the little one the short tube goes into) it doesn't take much to cause a problem. Those systems do not like getting left out in the rain. Also, be careful with the governor spring, that little bugger is what controls the engine speed. If it gets bent or stretched it's usually best to just get a new one.
