allis chalmers main bearings

I have a D17 allis chalmers built sometime in the sixties, not sure what year. Has 4cylinder gas engine. My question, I had the block line bored and crank turned and now I have 4-5 thousands bearing clearance can these bearings be shimed to about 2-3 thousands?
Thanks for any advice, I have had to use forty weight oil to have enough oil pressure and the rear main seal didn't last.

I think you made a big mistake having your engine line bored. You should've had the crank measured for wear at a good auto machine shop. It may've needed just polishing. Then buy your bearings from the machine shop. Check with the shop that did the machining to see if undersize bearings are available. Hal

Are you using standard bearings after having had the crank turned? El Toro is right- deal with the machine shop to get the correct bearings. You"ll need accurate measurements from each journal to get the right size bearings and correct crush. Don"t shave the bearing caps either- that won"t work.

You had it line bored and crank turned and now you have .004-5 th clearance. You machinist screwed up. I could shim it to proper clearance but very few others on this board could cause they think it is cobbling and can't or shouldn't be done.
It takes time and is monkey business but I can do it and will last for me thousands of hours and many years.
Let the beatings begin.
Seriously I would be beating on the machinist, unless there is more to the story that is not acceptable work. If you told machinist the size you wanted and you supplied the bearings and the bearing are off and he did what you said that is different.

Time to quit guessing and have the main bearing bores, the bearing shells, and the crank "mic'ed" by someone who knows how and settle the issue of what is "out of spec".

NO need for drama and shimming when you've paid a pro to do a job correctly!

That sort of stuff is 50 years out of date and was done by broke farmers that were desperate!

Why rig it when somebody you paid to fix your parts screwed up? Either crank is too small or bearing bore is too big, very unlikely that the bearings are not right.Hopefully you had the crank and block work preformed at the same shop because you need to box them and the bearings up and take them back. Hind sight now but line bore was very likely unnecessary and the most easily screwed up operation. in engine remanufacturing. I would bet money that your main bearing bores are the culprit.

bearing had turned and broken main bearing cap, I bought a used cap and had block bored so the cap would match up, also bearing had welded to crank so I had to have crank turned, I think the machine shop screwed up but that was a year ago I don"t think they will make it good.
