JOhn Deere 4020 Hydraulics

I have a 1966 Synchro range John Deere 4020. The hydraulics are slow and weak. Where should I start to trouble shoot? If I need a new hydraulic pump, should I spend the $2600 and buy from John Deere or should I rebuild the one I have? Is this something a couple of mechanically inclined folks could knock out or should this be a professional job at $75/hr? Are there alternative sources for good reman hydraulic pumps?

KISS formula. Change filters and screens first. Do a flow/pressure check with a meter and gauge. Establish that the pump is bad before throwing expensive parts at it. Deal with a tech that knows the system.

If you are going to tackle troubleshooting that system you need a factory shop manual.

The I&T manuals are not thorough enough.

A REAL factory manual (vs. certain reproductions being sold) has the hydraulic flow charts in color to indicate the various pressures and circuits.

When reproduced in B&W that info becomes useless.

Front pump can"t move oil if it"s supply from the transmission is
lacking.
Glad to see you are interested in trouble shooting and
repairing the fault. We usually get frustrated puzzled people on
here that have thrown $1000"s into the hydraulics guessing
with no improvement.
What kind of hydraulic load or loads?
There is a wee filter in the front pump inlet that is often forgotten.
