Cleaning governor on a Farmall H

Been having some throttle issues on my H so I rebuilt my carb and now want to clean up the governor. I plan on restoring it but need to use it for a while before I start. Anybody have any suggestions on the best way to clean out 70 years of gunk? I plan on taking the governor off the tractor but don't want to take the insides out. Anything I can soak it in? Thanks.

I'll give that a shot. There is some hard, caked on oil and grease just inside the breather cap of the governor that I probably will need to use some type of chemical whether it be carb cleaner, kersone, diesel fuel, oven cleaner, etc. I've read a lot of differing opinions on this so I guess I will try them all until I find the best one and get the insides cleaned out. Thanks.

On my 53 & 54 Super H's I dropped the oil pan, removed valve
cover, governor cover and got after it with a pressure washer.
Also removed oil pump pickup screen and cleaned.

Let it all dry out and reassembled. Fresh oil & filter then fired it
up.

I would disassemble it to clean it then put new
bearings back in it. Because there will always be
that one piece of debris you won't get out that
will get caught up in the bearings. That old oil
that is stuck to the housing is sticking for a
reason. Dirty oil, not changed often enough!

Just as well do it right the first time.

Thanks. I actually have started to disassemble it. The thrust bearing is shot so I need to replace that anyways. So far I think the toughest part is getting the woodruff keys out. Still working on them.
