Many thanks to all you Gentlemen who responded to my 1952 8 N PTO Shaft removal problem. Got the PTO Shaft removed today. Now please explain how to remove the oil Seal, Bearings, Sleeve to replace with new parts?. Or should I just take the Shaft to nearest Ford/New Holland Dealer to replace the goodies? Thanks, Dunnydoug

You need to remove the snap rings inside the bearing retainer. They can be a pain but they will come out.

Then set the shaft assembly in your vice short end up. Don't clamp it, just let the retainer rest on the jaws. Get a block of wood and 2# sledge. Place the wood on the short end of shaft. Smack with hammer.

Watch your toes when the shaft drops out...

Reinstall is just the reverse process.

This is all in the FO-4 manual. You will get more/better responses down on the N forum.

even easier. once you use 2 small screwdrivers to chase the split rings out, just drop that piece of wood on the ground and tap the shaft, short end down onthe wood, and the ebaring carrier falls off,

drive the seal out and replace

i usually cut the wear ring off and repalce bearing and drive a new ring on using angle iron or pipe as a driver tool and a small drilling hammer.

whole ordeal should not take you more than 15m.. when you hav ethe new seal in and beairng and wear ring on, lube it a bit, place pto shaft and bearing assy long end down on that wood, pilot shaft assy into back of carrier give it a tap to pilot wear ring in seal. button up last split ring and go.
