Worn Key Way Repair?

Can a worn key way be welded in and re cut by a machinist? I have the control arms on my Massey 40B that are worn badly and the steering is horrible, if I had this done, would it hold up??? I tested my theory last spring, used jb weld to "fix" the key way's, the steering was great for about an hour... I know it's the key ways, would rather not spend over $300 on new arms if i can have the old ones fixed... I have never attempted to have this done and do not want to take them to a machinist if it's not possible.

I just talked to a friend of mine who had a better idea I thought I would share, he says to cut the key way wider, then either make a custom key to fit the wider slot, or make shims to fill the gap between the existing key and the new squared sides of the key way. Welding in the old key way would actually weaken the metal which would likely cause the newly cut key way to give way much quicker than filling the gap with key stock shims. Seems like it should work to me.

Oversize keyway and key are about the only option for saving it. But... What kind of shape is the rest of the shaft and bore? If it's been wallowing loose for a while, then there will always be problems keeping it tight, once it gets loose it will wallow the new keyway just like the old one.

Might be time to surrender and replace the worn parts.

But, I haven't seen it, just a thought.
