The nylon bumper on the contact gap keeps melting. Someone has switched from generator to standard alternator, not sure if this makes any difference. Wondering what the problem is?

Ya greased it, right?

I suspect something is going on inside the distributor, like dry bushings, causing the shaft to get hot.

There is a grease plug on the side, might try removing the plug and packing some high temp grease in, screw the plug in, remove it and pack it again.

Or...Be a good time to pull the distributor, take it apart and lube and check everything. The weights are prone to stick, the bushings wear.

If it's in the budget, electronic conversions are more forgiving of worn distributors. Have had no problems with them.

While you likely have other issues, quality breaker points have phenolic wear blocks which do NOT "melt", no matter what.

You have been getting substandard points.
