Removing Massey 135 Exhaust Studs

I am putting a new horizontal exhaust on my Massey 135. The 3 studs on the exhaust manifold need replaced. Any advice on removing the old ones? Do they unscrew out the bottom or back out the top of the manifold?

Thanks

If you have a torch heat the manifold where the stud is screwed in. Try to keep heat off the stud. Heat until it moves, a little red glow won't hurt it. Grab it with vice grips and start working it out, back and forth until it frees up, then bring it on out. It comes out the shortest way.

If you don't have a torch, soak it with your favorite rust penetrant, the longer the better. Hit the end with a hammer, as if trying to drive it in. Not too hard, just enough to shock the rust free and let some penetrant get in. Then try to work them out with vice grips. If nothing wants to move, stop until you can get some heat on it, even if it's a propane torch, some is better than nothing. If it still won't move, wait until you can get a good torch.

Whatever method, chase the threads with a tap when done.

Twisting them off and drilling and taping is a last resort.

What Steve says, plus apply candle wax as it cools. Let it soak in between the threads. Might need second app on the tough ones. Never failed me. Even used wax on tough spark plugs where I couldn"t use a torch. Engine heat loosened them.

I just got done removing the exhaust studs from my 43 Farmall yesterday. As the guys mentioned above, I heated the head around the bolts with a propane torch (try not to heat the bolt), then put a pipe wrench on and worked them back and forth, some were easier than others, but just take your time and don't get in a big hurry. If your having to really tug on them, don't be afraid to use a little more heat. It took me about 45 minutes to remove all six of mine. When you go back with new bolts, be sure to put some anti seize on them.
Good luck.
