pto problems on a 801 select o speed

I'm working on a 801 ford select o speed built in 1964. The pto cable broke and a used one would cost 185$, so I bought a push-pull type cable and modified it to work. Well it worked ok except now I can't disengage the pto. I took the cable back off and by hand pushed the lever under the cover of the gear box and it still won't disengage. The lever moves fine, so is there something I am missing? Thanks.

801 year model range was 58-62, a 64 is a 4000..

one thing to check.. are you simply seeing freewheeling.. or is it staying powered?.

The lever under the cover that the cable engages is fairly light sheet steel. It is not hard to bend so that it loses its throw. Mine was not right when I got it and I rarely used it. I had to shut the motor off to get it to disengage. Finally a couple years ago I decided to get into it, and upon disassembly I found the bent part.
