Years ago my dad made a patch out of some aluminum that I believe had been a road sign, and bolted it in place with some sort of sealant in between.

If the crack is not going to spread you can patch it with this stuff. I used it on a couple of cracks caused by dents and it worked good. Basically some kind of plastic you melt and smear into place.

Depends on several factors... Where it cracked, why it cracked, how is the boat used?

If it's in a high stress area, like the transom, it will need to be plated and welded. Most boats have a wood core inside the transom, it may need to be replaced.

If it's a non stress area it could be welded, or plated and pop riveted with epoxy sealer in between.

Really need more info and pictures would be nice.

aluminum can be soldered by first tinning it with 90/10 solder, brushing it in with a brass brush, then use ordinary 50/50 for the strength

If it's not a stress crack, just a rivet or a seam that is seeping, 3M sells tubes of Marine sealer to fix those. It is very sticky and stinky but it dries flexible and it works well. I found it in a Walmart with the boating supplies, $15.
