JD 40 Fuel Line Size / Intermittent sputtering

I have a John Deere Model 40 Tricycle. Does anyone know the inside diameter of the original fuel line that runs from the sediment trap to the carburetor? This was a hard metal line (like hard break line on a car). I made one up but I am beginning to think it is too small. When I adjust slow idle, all OK. When I adjust fast idle, all OK. When she"s in motion it sputters intermittently. I replaced the carb with a brand new Zenith. It runs good when not in motion. I have checked timing, loose wires, etc. I"d like to know the original fuel line size if anyone knows it regardless if this is the cause but would love any thought. Thanks in advance.

Do you have the correct elbow/strainer installed at the carb end, and is it clean"?

Schebler # for the strainer is 67-523.

Spec's for #67-523 state the pipe thread side (that screws into the carb) is 1/8" pipe thread, and the other side accepts 1/4" tubing (industry size).

So there's your answer... 1/4" tubing.

Thanks for the help...my setup doesn"t even have the strainer (It was not on the original carb when we bought the tractor). I will get one. I am sure the distributor is original so I guess I will check that out next. Any hints on how to asses?

Did you ever figure this out? I have a 1951 M that does the exact same thing! Sometimes it will run perfect (pop, pop, pop, pop) and other times it sputters and backfires. The tank is clean and coated and the carb is new/re-manufactured. Adjusting the carb does nothing to improve the condition. I put in new points, condenser, distributor cap, plugs and wires and set the timing with a light. The motor was stuck when I got the tractor but freed up pretty easy after a good MMO soak. The tractor starts and runs stout but just has that annoying backfire.

(quoted from post at 21:50:12 04/10/14) Did you ever find the problem on your M? I'm having the same issue with my H.

I diagnosed mine as more of a double/cross fire instead of a backfire. I had bought standard automobile spark plug wires from O'Reilly and read somewhere it needed the copper core wires with the straight steel terminals. I ordered a set and it runs a whole lot better. I still get an occasional inconsistent pop but all the old tractors guys says that is normal with these 2 cylinders. I'm going to try and get a video of it running and see what the guys on here say.
