JD A . .what to do?

I have two '49 model A JDs. One I bought running and used it for a few years, then the engine gave up. Upon further inspection, the trans is wore out too. The other I bought stuck, it had been so for 30 + years. The block is cracked and head is shot, but mechanically the rest of the tractor is in great shape. The tin is bad , mostly rusted thru from sitting so long. However, the stuck tractor has very little wear in the trans and clutch, I think it had low hours when it was parked. I have all the engine parts from my original A back from the machine shop, everything is ready to go back together. My original thought was to take the trans from the stuck tractor and put in my original A, but now I think I may be better off just putting my rebuilt engine and good tin work into the stuck tractor. Like I said, its in far tighter condition than my original A. I pulled the motor and crank from it earlier on as was going to use the crank in still another A that I have. So its already apart as far as that goes. Bad idea. . .or go with it?

Just too bad that the trans is not a component. That would have been really neat if they were a component tractor.

How about a 'repower'? in this case,a 454 Chevy.Mounted sideways, belt driven right through the original crankshaft.BTW, bit of history. The original repower was a 283 Chevy. It was used to farm with for over 20 years. When that engine 'cratered',the 454 was installed. It is now a 'show tractor'

My loader tractor is nearly the same. The engine is top notch but everything else is worn out. I have a parts tractor that is a lot tighter. I will be doing a split and switch someday when I am bored.

Hi
I used to work in a wrecking yard, wouldn't be the first time a guy came in for parts and looked at the tractor and said hey this is better than mine, and gone home with the whole tractor. Then took odd parts from his old one to get the other one going. A good friend of mine worked in a combine yard he said same thing used to happen there.
you got to do what ya got to do, to be were you want with a good tractor!.
Regards Robert
