Ford 3000 power steering

This winter when when blowing snow, I discovered fluid leaking from where the steering shaft disappears into the hood just under the steering wheel. I expect that high pressures from thick fluid (very cold winter), cause a seal to break. My repair manual shows the system to be very complicated. Is this something I can do myself, or should I have a professional repair the system--maybe replace all the seals at the same time.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

C, that's something only you can answer. If you have the tools and some mechanical ability you can do it.

To me, the hardest part of working on a steering gear is getting it apart, as in getting the pittman arms off the taper splines without damaging the gear housing, getting a rusty steering wheel off without breaking it...

Far as I know there are no specialty tools needed. Remember, you're just going after seals, not completely rebuilding the gear. A caution though, some components should not be disassembled, as in the ball/screw assy. or the directional valve. A manual would be handy to have.

Your decision to do this or not also depends if you have a trusted mechanic in mind. I absolutely hate and fear hiring someone that I don't know their ability and ethics to do anything for me! Been burned almost every time I've been forced to do that! Again, it's your decision, personally, I like to do my own work, I've never overcharged myself yet! LOL
