50 john deere b

been restoring this tractor this winter and it was time to start it today so I got it running but it would only run at wide open on half choke. this is a rebuilt carb I purchased and a rebuilt mag I purchased. I have it rough timed and have the mag set in the middle right now not sure if I need to retard or advance. it starts right up easy but only runs at slow rpms wide open at half choke. I went through carb and float level and everything appears ok so im assuming its ignition not carb. both adjustment screws are at 1 turn but doesn"t make any difference much when I turn them while its running the idle one does but the other one doesn"t do much. any advice would be appreciated thanks

forgot to mention the bottom of air cleaner where you fill the oil to the line was leaking so its together but with no oil in it right now. not sure if that would effect any of this as of right now.

If you have to run the choke, there is something plugging the carb. All those brass plugs have to come out and orifices cleaned with drill bits by hand. Set your timing so the mag snaps at top dead center of the pistons. Ron Mn.

sounds to me like its either running out of fuel or the carb. needs adjusted , it takes a while for the adjustment to work on them , my 49 B cyclone has DLTX67 carb, should be the same as your 50 & it took a while to get it right & will need adjusted under load later too , as far as mag. sounds like its timed good if it starts up easy , should click when flywheel is on the inpulse mark not TDC , lined up with the mark on the gear cover by flywheel, you could advance it a little but not much or it will kick back when starting , check out fuel flow , float adjustment & then turn open fuel screw some 1/2 turn or so ,once your close go 2-3 clicks at a time & wait a while , if it takes the choke to keep it running its not getting enough fuel , when all is tuned properly it should pop right off even by hand starting

Assuming you are confident of your carb rebuilder,s expertise , I would go up the pipe further. Is the sediment bulb completely full? Take the line off where it goes into the carb and open the sediment valve open. Should run out about the size of pencil. If not blow back up through with compressed air. If you have plenty of fuel to carb then your carb wasn't done correctly. It is starving. Once you find the problem then shut the load needle and open idle 1.5 turns and warm up tractor and then set idle mixture by opening throttle lever wide open (called fast idle) and set the idle needle where it runs the best.Start opening up until it runs a little rough and then back 1/2 turn or so until it evens back out. Turning WILL make an immediate difference in running. Now open load up 1-1.5 turns. It will not make a difference accept under load.

thanks guys, I took the carb off today, took the jets off and all the brass screws ran wire and carb cleaner through the holes and blew air threw everything. they seem to be clear nicely and ok. also took needle and float out and looked through everything looks good, I raised the float up some and see if that does anything. also the gas flows fast and nice out of the sediment bowl. I will crank it up tmrw morning and let you know what I find out.

well after going through the carb and making sure everything looked good I adjusted float level a couple times and still the same issue I even raised it way up until it wood flood it out and still the same. I went back through the mag timing and got it exactly perfect now it runs without the choke but only wide open and the rpms just goes up and down up and down wont stay consistent at all. However if I hold the governor linkage from going back and forth it runs great at any position I hold it too. I don't understand, the weights and position of everything is right ive checked it several times.

So now you have eliminated everything but the gov and/or linkage. You said it runs excellent if you take the gov out of equasion. Assuming the gov is operating correctly then that leaves either a binding linkage or the little cotter pins holding the ends of the linkage are wedging somewhere and binding until the governer overcomes it and lets go. You said you have the gov right.
