730 Case brake repair

Hello
I have a 1966 730 COM. The left brake sticks when applied, but releases when the tractor is reversed. Can anybody tell me how to repair the brakes? Any photos would help. I am hoping the wheel doesn"t have to be removed.
I have a repair manual, but the breaks section really doesn"t tell you much.
Thank you
Gary

Your tractor has simple dry disc brakes with a metal expander assy between the two discs.
Pull the cover housings off, clean the discs up, inspect for excessive ware, deterioration. Make sure the quill seals are not leaking oil on discs. Take the expander assy apart and clean the balls and sockets up good, apply a bit of grafite lub to the balls, and make sure the little springs that hold the assy together are good. They are pretty selfexplanitory when you take them apart.

The brake pedal adjustment is also very important on these tractors as well. Once you get the expanders out and apart this will make more sense. If they are expanding too far to achive full application the "balls" will be ramping out too far. This will also cause problems/sticking. That is also an indication that the linings are wore out. Also if they are too tight they will drag and heat up and do the same thing. Like the others are saying, everything must be very clean and lubricated to work right. I do know that these tractors brakes are fussy to adjust. Once you get it, they work just fine. Just my 2 cents from what I've learned on my 930's.

Here's what the brake housing looks like on my 930CK. And you don't have to remove the wheel to do this. Your tractor will look almost the same. Just remove the bolts holding the cover on and you can get to the brakes. Also, like others said, If that bull pinion seal is leaking oil inside you have to fix that first. Otherwise you have a mess in there and the brakes will never work right.
