VH4D the verdict is in !!

Well,
I considered all the advice I got, at times it gets hard to pick which way to go. I decided to review some old post from el toro , bob, Ralph . El-toro kept asking about the timing and posting a picture of the flywheel and different marks. So I decided to really read what he was saying and asking. It sort of put me in a situation where I was second guessing the timing that I did a few months back, so I hand cranked the motor and per the manual the rotor should click at the same time number one piston is TDC and the vein marked with an X is at 12:00 , well in researching this I found the rotor clicking at 10:00 not 12:00 so I left the flywheel fin at 12:00, removed the mag and it took a lot to get it right , a lot of turning, re-installing, turning, re-installing. So at this point number one is TDC at 12:00 and the closest I could get the rotor to snapping is about 11:55 close enough for me! I double checked the firing order 1342 all is good , fired it up and I just stood there and smiled! Thanks everyone!

There is a trick to magnetos I think you do know this but I will tell you again. Look on magneto gear for a mark. Spin magneto around till after number one fires or clicks.Look at gear is back up to the number one spot. the object is that the Magneto will then be on time because you have the engine on top dead center and the #1 cylinder should have already been fired. This other way of installing does not require the other steps of winding it up and holding it when installing. Iam sorry I thought you already knew these tricks on a magneto. This will put you on time and it will not be off the timing. The magneto require it to wind up to spin and generate a spark for that cylinder that is why you where off time in the first place. Brent

Brent, actually what I think happend was , I had the engine flywheel per the manual with the fin marked X in the center , I was defiantly at TDC on the number one piston, but when I installed the mag I worried too much about seeing the X on the mag gear feather then when exactly the mag was creating the spark for the number one piston. So the timing was too retarded firing too soon. I did notice where the X was on the mag before finding its permanent home and it"s a couple teeth away so as I said in my post thank god it"s working now and a couple teeth away from the site window is good enough for me,

Hey Scott that sounds great just as long it runs great that is a good thing. I have to pull a head off of mine because I had a broken bolt on it that the machine shop did not see to take out. It is apart of the govenor and acelleratetor links. So I have to pull one head off and drill out and tap, die threads back in to the exhause port. YOu should know which one I am going to have to do. (L.O.L.) my mistake did not check that head before installing. Brent

That"s a bummer, yeah I had a few things I had to figure out on mine. The machine shop went out of business halfway thru the rebuild and fearing I would lose my engine I kinda paid the guy for what he did and finished up the rest my self, I found out what the shop did was very minimal and actually not correct. So never doing any kind of engine rebuild I started getting into this thing , it"s been a year and a half .
