580D Brakes

Hello to all. This is my first time to post here and I hope this is an appropriate question.

I have a 580D with backhoe that was previously owned by a relative. Due to financial restraints, he was not able to maintain the tractor properly, so there is a large number of items that could use some attention on the tractor.

First of all, the tractor requires a lot of power to break loose from being parked overnight. To me, it feels like the brakes are engaged.

However, once it "breaks free" and warms up a little, it moves back and forth from forward to reverse better.

But, sometimes when the brake pedal is depressed, the brakes seem to grab. Then, it takes a great deal of power to break free again.

I would add that I have always used the tractor in a low gear and in fact, have never changed gears from what it was in the day it was delivered to me.

I would appreciate any advice on the problem. Also, if someone could provide a fairly detailed description of how 580D brakes function, I would appreciate that as well.

I am old not able to do much physical work on the machine, but I am looking for a mobile mechanic to work on it for me. And, when I can afford one, I will buy the proper repair and maintenance manual.

As a side note, I have used the machine to dig a septic system and other related work, and it digs pretty well.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with the 580D, so I can't give any practical advise on making repairs.

I would advise you to find a way to purchase a service manual and familiarize yourself with it before attempting any repairs, or before you hire any work done.

There are several manuals available through this site, not sure exactly which 580D you have, but you will need a "service manual". Quite pricey, but if it shows you some simple adjustment you can make, think how much it will save on a mobile service call! You might find one through Ebay, but be sure you order the right one.

Might try posting this in the Case section below, maybe someone there has had direct experience.

Thanks, Steve. I have located some service manuals and will most likely buy one soon. In the meantime, I'm hoping to hear from someone who knows the brake system on 580D's.

Depending on what I hear, I may just opt to sell the tractor and rent one whenever I need to dig.

I have some health problems that would prevent me from doing anything but the simplest repairs to the tractor.

Thanks again.

The 580D uses a mineral based fluid in the brake system while the previous models used DOT3 fluid. Any chance someone topped off the reservoir with the wrong stuff?

It's possible the previous owner may have put the wrong fluid in it. I have not added any fluids to the machine except hydraulic oil.

Is there a way to detect the wrong brake fluid?

Thanks.
